Auburn University requires a dissertation for all Ph.D. degrees and a thesis for many master’s degrees. The thesis or dissertation is a demonstration of the student’s mastery of the field of study and an example of the student’s creativity, dedication, and the ability to work independently.

The Auburn University Graduate School now requires electronic copies of theses and dissertations. Consequently, the Graduate School has created a database making these works freely available on the World Wide Web and the A. U. Libraries have added a link to this AUETD (Auburn University Electronic Thesis and Dissertation) database under the Articles and Databases link located in the upper left.The dissertation proposal is similar to a contract between the committee and the student. If the student conducts the research described in the proposal, then the research will be viewed as suitable for the dissertation.
